Artist: John Smart 1742/3-1811 - Alleged to have been born near Norwich, Norfolk around 1743. At the age of 12 he won his first award, second prize at the Society of Arts` competition for Children under 14. Smart won further prizes at the Society of Arts and subsequently became apprenticed to William Shipley at his school in St Martin`s Lane on 23 September 1755. He exhibited at the Society of Artists 1762-1783 and at the R.A. 1797-1811. Elected F.S.A. 1765, Director 1772, Vice President 1777 and President 1778. He died on 1 May 1811. John Smart is considered one of the leading miniature artists of all time
