Miniature of Thomas Herbert, 8th Earl of Pembroke and 5th Earl of Montgomery, wearing a long wig, embroidered coat and white lace cravat.  A ship on the waters is painted in the background.  Watercolour on vellum C1690.  Silver frame with decorative scroll top and plain reverse.
NB: Herbert was the third son of Philip Herbert, 5th Earl of Pembroke and his wife, Catherine Villiers.  He had 2 brothers, 6th and 7th Earls, both without male heirs, whom he succeeded to the earldom in 1683.  From 1690 - 1692 Pembroke was First Lord of the Admiralty and then served as Lord Privy Seal until 1699, being in 1697 the first plenipotentiary of Great Britain at the congress of Ryswick.
