Extremely unusual pair of real walnut shells which hinge open to reveal their contents. One has a miniature model of a man in straw hat, set before a mirror, carrying books on his back surrounded by carved flowers. The other side has a vase with carved flower centre and flower, cups and shell surrounds. The matching shell has the same figure carrying straw and with a bundle on his back and a carved basket containing exotic fruits on the other side. French C1820.
