Rare travelling inkwell shaped as a trunk. The turquoise-ground enamel is decorated with raised white dot geometric design and the etui has hand-painted vignettes side, top and edges of pastoral scenes. The copper-gilt mounts hinge open to reveal its contents: a pair of faceted clear glass bottles with enamelled lids which pull off to reveal a sander and an aperture for the ink. Gilded sliding pencil and handle for the nibs, knife and seal to screw into. Birmingham C1765.
